Sheffield United starlet Diego De Girolamo issued a timely reminder of his talents yesterday as he notched a superb hat-trick in a 7-0 U21 victory over Coventry City at the Redtooth Academy.
De Girolamo, who returned to Bramall Lane after two loan spells at League Two side York City, netted his treble in front of watching United manager Nigel Clough, who confirmed last week that the League One side plan to offer the Italian youth international a new contract to stay in South Yorkshire.
De Girolamo was not on the bench last weekend as United secured a vital 2-1 victory over promotion rivals Preston North End at Bramall Lane, but could feature in the squad on Saturday as Clough’s side travel to MK Dons. With the likes of Che Adams and Kieran Wallace cup-tied, he could also feature at Deepdale when United face Preston again the following week, in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
“Diego is one of the few lads out who isn’t cup tied and so we’ll possibly try to squeeze him in if we can.” Clough said recently.
“We will get his contract sorted out and then maybe get him back out for some more experience.”
