Diagonals bounce back

WOODBECK Diagonals bounced back from last week’s defeat to Hyson Green with a 2-0 win at Southwell City.

It was the Diagonals’ first away victory of the season.

Excellent weather and a decent pitch encouraged good football from both teams.

The first half failed to produce any clear chances although Sam Hutchinson did fire wide from an angle and Lewis Jones weaved passed three players but was unable to manufacture a shot.

Southwell did produce glimpses of chances by going down the left wing but the crosses failed to find anyone.

In the second half both teams upped their game but Diagonals started to keep possession for longer periods, before Hutchinson whipped a wicked cross in and Liam Greenwood guided it with a glance of his head into the net.

Diagonals settled down, delivering sustained pressure and the chances started to come at regular intervals.

Hutchinson lactched onto a through ball and rounded the keeper to rifle his third goal of the campaign for number two.

Southwell threw caution and ploughed forward to produce a stunning save from goalkeeper Zac Dilly, who managed to back peddle and touch a lob over the crossbar.

The hosts fought to the end and some of the Diagonals defending looked desperate but the back line held firm for a much deserved clean sheet.
