The young defender wants to get rid of any rustyness experienced during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Parkgate.

“I feel like we could’ve done better,” said Atherton. “I thought the second half especially, we needed a bit more quality on the ball.“I thought we should’ve taken our chances but getting game time and minutes under our belts is what we needed.

“It’s important for when the season does finally restart, so we need as much game time as we can.“It’s been very important to have been involved because you can try and keep fit, but there’s no better way than playing games.“For me, it’s been helpful to get sharp and to pick up the quickness of game time.”Atherton has been partnered up with a more experienced defender in Jake Picton in the last two games.

And Atherton believes that the partnership has helped to improve his game."Jake [Picton] is a great defender, I can learn a lot from him,” continued Atherton.“He talks to me throughout the game, it helps me out and it’s great to play alongside him.“I want to try and break into the team; I’ve had a couple of chances in the past week, hopefully I’ve taken them and hopefully I kick on now.”During the game, Craig Parry switched his tactics, meaning Atherton moved over to the left-hand side as part of a back three.Atherton said: “The switch over in the second half wasn’t too much of a problem, moving over to the left helps you push forward a little bit more.“It’s great to learn different positions: the beauty of it is that we can switch formations if we have to.“The aim now is to play as much football as I can and hopefully, I can use my experience from the past few seasons to help me kick on.”
