County hat-trick for ustoppable Bassetlaw Boys side

Bassetlaw Boys, already Midland Counties Champions and ESFA National Finalists, finished their playing season on a high note when they added a third County Championship title to their season’s tally, defeating the City of Nottingham Boys on the Forest Academy ground.

Nottingham were the first to attack and were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area in only the second minute, a kick that brought a brilliant save from goalkeeper George Atkinson when he tipped the ball onto the bar.

After the interval Nottingham came out in a determined mood but came across a Bassetlaw defence that broke down all their efforts before they got into their penalty area.

Full-backs Adam Duffy and Finn Sweetnam and central defenders Josh Robson and Liam Frost put up an impenetrable defensive wall and Bassetlaw began to take control of the game.

It was no surprise when leading goalscorer Jay Smith put Bassetlaw in front with a hard low shot just inside the post and Regan Watkinson put the result beyond any doubt when he broke free and coolly lobbed the keeper to complete a 2-0 victory.

With this victory Bassetlaw completed a season’s treble of County Championships at five, seven and 11-a-side and demonstrated their all-round ability at all forms of the game in a season that has seen them travel to Stoke, Leeds, Hull, Scarborough, East Riding, Nottingham, Birmingham and Chelsea’s amazing Academy complex with great distinction .

The inter-school season comes to an end today (Thursday) at Harworth Colliery FC when Division One champions, Carr Hill meet the Division Two winners, Sir Edmumd Hillary for the ‘Worksop Guardian’ Champion of Champions Shield.

Before the game the Bassetlaw Boys squad will meet at 5pm for a formal squad photograph to commemorate their successful season.
