BASSETLAW Council’s Cabinet met last night to approve the transfer of the lease for Sandy Lane football ground.

Previous leaseholders 1861 Leisure Limited agreed to sell the lease to Mr Peter Whitehead of Windsor Foodservice, and the council last night threw their weight behind the proposed deal.

A spokesman told the Guardian: “The assignment of the lease was approved by Cabinet on 5th April. The legal process to ensure the completion of the assignment is now underway.”

Mr Whitehead has stated his intention to bring his own club, Parramore Sports, to the ground, along with Worksop Town FC, who currently groundshare with Retford United.

A return to the town would be a massive boost for Tigers, who could celebrate their 150th birthday and look to increase attendance figures next season.

Council leader Mike Quigley said this was an excellent news story for both the town and Tigers fans.

“We have been in talks with the owners and other parties on this matter for some time and I am pleased that Worksop Tigers will be back in Worksop shortly,” he said.

“And with ASDA taking over Netto soon, this will mean we will have a football team and an ASDA in Worksop.”
