Blues lose in cup final

Gainsborough Trinity took Conference Premier rivals Lincoln City all the way to penalties in the county cup final on Tuesday.

The game was goalless in regulation time, and with no extra-time period, the Blues and the Imps went straight to spot-kicks on the Northolme.

Mike Emery, replacing Phil Barnes between the posts for the home side, was in action early on in the game, denying both Waide Fairhurst and Adi Yussuf.

Ciaran Toner thought he’d opened the scoring before the half hour mark with a shot that was clawed out by Lincoln stopper David Preece.

Jonathan Williams was impressive for the home side, and his long range drive almost gave Trinity the lead, the crossbar coming to Lincoln’s rescue.

In the second half Emery had to be sharp, and his woodwork helped out when Todd Jordan hit the post.

The game went to penalties, and first up was Mo Fofana who beat Emery to make it 1-0.

Simon Russell replied for Trinity, before Fairhurst finally got the better of the Blues keeper.

Dom Roma was unable to reply for Trinity, and was relieved to see Bohan Dixon miss City’s next kick.

But Dan Clayton was also unable to convert, and Lincoln went 3-1 up thanks to Alex Simmons.

Toner was successful with Trinity’s fourth penalty, only to see Dan Gray win it for the Imps.

Gainsborough are without a game on Saturday.
