Badgers win, but turmoil ensues

RETFORD United may be flying on the pitch, but off it the club is in financial turmoil yet again

Manager Brett Marshall announced his intention to resign at the end of the season, along with assistant Graham Walker, and chairman Bill Wyles has released a statement confirming that ‘old debts that are dragging the club down’.

On Saturday, before his shock announcement, Marshall’s men secured a 4-0 win over bottom club Selby Town.

United were on the attack from kick off, an early corner sent in by Adam Scott was perfect for Karl Slack, but he was just wide with his header.

Rob Austin managed to find Slack in the box, but the United striker could only fire the ball over the crossbar on his home debut.

Retford won a free-kick in a dangerous area, the ball found Warren Hatfield who tried to shoot on the turn but he slipped.

Selby started to look dangerous, Craig Aspinall’s effort was just over the bar and they went close again from a corner, but United keeper Jason Fisher was on hand to pluck the ball out of the air before it could find a target man.

Retford’s pressure eventually did pay off on the half hour when a free -ick was sent into the box, Jamie Hainsworth rose to head clear but missed the header leaving Chris Baugh free to nod past the advancing keeper for his third of the season.

United went into the break with another goal, right on the half-time whistle, Scott was fed by Slack and he managed to beat the keeper with a low drive to extend United’s lead.

The hosts scored their third on 62 minutes, Scott with his second of the afternoon, latching onto a through ball from Slack, with the keeper at full stretch, Scott did enough to slide the ball into the net and put the game beyond doubt.

Seven minutes from time Hatfield found the net from the edge of the box for 4-0.

The next outing for the Badgers is on Saturday when they host Armthorpe Welfare at Cannon Park.
