Retford United’s pre-season kicked off with their prestigious friendly against last season’s League One champions Doncaster Rovers.

Badgers went down 4-2 at the Jones & Co Stadium, on a blazing hot afternoon, as both Richard Sennett and Doncaster boss Paul Dickov played their full squads and triallists.

Just six minutes were on the clock when Retford took the lead, Reece Thompson drilling the ball home after getting past the Doncaster defence.

Chances for both sides came and went, but they left the field for the interval with Retford still 1-0 up.

The second half began with a goal for Doncaster, although Dave Syers’ effort was disallowed for an infringement.

Minutes later, Rovers were back on level terms as a defensive mistake let Chris Brown through and he beat Ayden Duffy to delight the travelling support.

Doncaster’s fresh legs were having an impact on the game, and Syers got through again but put the ball wide.

The final 10 minutes were action packed, as Doncaster went ahead when Brown got his second of the game.

Lee Holmes then hit back for Retford on his return to the club.

But Syers finally hit the target to put Rovers into the lead for a second time, then it was all over in stoppage time after a penalty kick was converted by Brown for hit hat-trick, sending Rovers away with the win

Retford host local rivals Worksop Town on Saturday, with a 3pm kick-off.
