Award double for Captain Cotterill

The former Barrow defender picked up the Worksop Guardian Player of the Year award, and his team-mates voted him the Players’ Player of the Year.

Speaking to the Guardian after watching from the bench as Tigers won the Sheffield Senior Cup, Cotterill admitted it wasn’t the season he was hoping for.

He said: “Even though I came away with the Players’ Player and the Worksop Guardian award I’m still a bit disappointed.”

“I’ve not particularly enjoyed the season, with the results we had, but on a personal level it’s nice to come away with some awards.”

“I was a bit inconsistent up until Martin (McIntosh, former boss) left but I think since then I’ve been quite consistent, without pulling any trees up and without being horrible.”

Cotterill was captain of the side this season, sharing those duties at times with Matt Young and Mark Hudson, and off the field he’s very much a ‘club man’.

The 29-year-old said: “I speak to a lot of people about the club, they ask me what it’s like and I say it’s as good as any.”

“The chairman’s backing towards the club, the fans, the atmosphere around the club, the directors, it’s all good.”

“I can only speak highly about the fans and the directors.”

Cotterill played 43 times for Tigers this season, adding to the 20 games he racked up in the previous campaign having been signed by McIntosh.

Only four other players in the squad that finished the season have played more games for the club.

In all games excluding the Senior Cup, Cotterill’s average match rating was 6.8 – pipping last year’s winner Luke Shiels, who averaged 6.7.

Marc Roberts actually finished top of the averages, with 7.1, but the youngster only featured for half a season before being sent on loan to Buxton.

Also running Cotterill close for the award were goalkeeper Jon Worsnop and prolific midfielder Mark Hudson, who both left before the end of the season.

The Worksop Town supporters gave their ‘Home Player of the Year’ award to Luke Shiels, and the away equivalent to full-back Chris Woods.

Jamie Jackson picked up the Top Goalscorer award for his 18 goals this season, and the President’s Cup went to Under 19 prospect Alex Nightingale.

Shiels, who has now made 112 appearances for Worksop Town, was also the Webmaster’s Player of the Year.
