Fluffy Toys celebrate hat-trick of titles

DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys have retained the Division One title, their third in succession.

A thrilling end to the season has seen the Toys pip Zygabytes A at the last minute.

Toys took full advantage of Zygabytes dropping a point last week, by winning their game in hand 6-4 against MBE, which left the Toys having to win their last match to take the title by a single point.

Straight forward as the scenario seemed, their opponents and club colleagues The Roosters weren’t in any mood to do them any favours and played their strongest possible side of Ernest Mpundu, Sarah Short and Rick Harris.

In a close and nervy encounter the Roosters pushed the Toys all the way with Mpundu winning two and Sarah Short adding another and even though the Roosters also won the doubles it just wasn’t enough to stop the Toys claiming the vital two points with a 6-4 victory.

Richard Wesley starred for the Toys with a hat-trick of wins, Steve Walker adding two more before Thomas Wesley had a vital win over Harris.

Zygabytes A, who will no doubt be disappointed not to have won the title themselves, have had a fine debut season finishing as creditable runners-up and finished their league campaign off in style with a 6-4 win over MBE.

In the amazing battle of the basement in Division One Ryton Park Adders completed their great escape with a fine 6-4 victory over Global Marble despite a hat-trick from Globals Kartik Lakhani.

The Adders had Gary Scott ‘playing up’ from Division Two and he had a great night, winning two of his three games, as did Andy Lee.

John Hallgarth added a win before teaming up with Lee to beat Steve Elkin and Rob Vaughan in the doubles to keep Adders.

Fellow relegation candidates The Bees were trying to fight their way out of trouble against DTH Redlands Outlaws.

The Bees battled hard but with the Outlaws Isobel Ashley completing a hat-trick they found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-4 scoreline and now must wait for the outcome of Stanley Street A versus Ryton Park Adders next week to see if they will stay up.

The race for the Division Three title became somewhat clearer as amazingly Stanley Street B played three matches in three nights.

First up was a league match with Centre For Sport and in no time they completed a 10-0 victory.

Their second match was their scheduled league game against bottom side Ryton Park Dragons who could only field two players and lost heavily 9-1 with only Matthew Williams dropping a set for Stanley Street, losing to Justin Flear.

The third game was the Division Three title decider against DTH Redlands Allsorts which included the unbeaten Tom McIntosh.

McIntosh didn’t disappoint and won yet another hat-trick to ensure the match went right down to the wire.

The Street’s Jack Kirkland and Ralph Rodda won two each with Matthew Williams adding a single set and with Lee Bohan adding a single win for the Allsorts it all meant that the result hinged on the doubles game.

McIntosh and Lewis Comley paired up for the Allsorts with Rodda and Kirkland playing for Stanley Street.

In a tight match which went down to the fifth and final set it was Rodda and Kirkland who just did enough to guarantee the win for Stanley Street and they now only need only a draw from their last two games to be certain of winning the title.
