First win for Dinnington as they beat Barnsley

DINNINGTON followed up their good performance from the previous week by claiming their first victory of the season, against a Barnsley side who were Yorkshire Division Two champions last season.

Buoyed by the return of key players, Dinnington started strongly and kept Barnsley on the back foot for the opening 10 minutes with no reward.

Fifteen minutes into the game Barnsley won a kickable penalty but opted for a scrum which Dinnington easily dealt with and cleared their lines.

Two minutes later Dinnington went in front when Jonny West intercepted a loose pass and released Luke Borton on a run.

He drew the last defender to set up Chris Williams to score in the corner.

The conversion attempt hit the upright.

Two minutes later Dinnington stretched their lead after Barnsley were penalised at a ruck and West landed a penalty.

Dinnington were on top despite their play being littered with errors and were thankful that Barnsley could not take advantage of them.

Ten minutes from half time Dinnington went 11-0 ahead as West landed his second penalty from close to halfway.

Barnsley put in a late rally to the half and close to half time saw a penalty attempt miss the target, the closest they had looked like scoring in the opening 40 minutes.

The hosts were under pressure again straight from the kick off to the second half as Dinnington looked for an early score.

Tyle Stimpson was stopped inches short of the line after a good run before Barnsley were reduced to 14 men after conceding a string of penalties close to their own line.

Dinnington took a quick penalty and Ryan Donnelly burrowed over for a try. West added the conversion.

Barnsley then woke up and Dinnington were forced to do some defending

The home side came close following a kick through 10 minutes into the half and this heralded a period of home pressure.

However, their moves were obvious and Dinnington were able to anticipate and deal with the danger.

As the game went into its final minutes Barnsley started to throw the ball about to try to open the game up.

Dinnington put in some excellent defending but conceded far too many penalties in doing so.

Four minutes from time, the pressure finally told as Barnsley scored in the corner.

The home side then looked for another score to try to get a losing bonus point but Dinnington stood firm to deny them.
