Fancy day out for the Striders at 2013’s Great North Run

Twelve Gainsborough Striders entered the Great North Run last weekend, over the half marathon distance from Newcastle to South Shields.

Five of the Striders entered the race in fancy dress costumes and raised funds for the Lincolnshire and Notts Air Ambulance.

Lottie Lindley, dressed as Wonderwoman, finished in 1 hour 59 mins 39 secs beating her previous best time from 2012 by eight minutes.

Angela Overson appeared as Superwoman and ran 2:12:11, the same time as Shaun Boyle and Glenn Peniston, who were both running as the ‘Dave Bedford’ lookalikes from a well known telephone directory service advertisement.

Lorna Allison was the fastest Strider in a cave woman outfit, in a good time of 1 hour 36 mins.

Simon Hunt and Mark Cutts, making his half-marathon debut for the club, ran 1:47:44 and 1:57:33 respectively.

A quartet of lady Striders made their half-marathon debuts: Sonia O’Connor (2:05:39), Sarah Curtis (2:09:11), Karen King (2:11:15) and Andrea Boulton (2:20:20).

Karen King was raising funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Completing the line-up for the Striders was Kim Metcalfe in a new personal best of 2 hours 37 mins 12 secs, a new best by over two minutes.

Alan Clark led the Striders home in the latest Scunthorpe 5K parkrun at Central Park in a new personal best time of 18 mins 36 secs.

Next home was Alan’s fifteen year old son, Elliott, who registered a fine new personal best of 19 mins 32 secs.

A trio of Striders made their parkrun debuts: Hayley Bellamy (31:57), Pete Ford (32:42) and Sara Newsam (35:18).

All club members should note that the Phil Rose Memorial Race will be held over the club’s 10K course on Sunday 13th October, starting on Walkerith Road, heading down Carr Lane to East Stockwith, onto Walkerith and returning to Morton, finishing on Field Lane.

Tomorrow (Friday 20th September) evening from 7.30pm sees the Striders’ latest social night at the Elm Cottage, where a curry will be laid on for members, who are encouraged to turn up wearing commemorative race tee-shirts and medals from 2013.
