Duo Tri sport out

BASSETLAW Triathlon Club took time out of their Monday training session to celebrate the achievements of two club members.

The district’s newest sports club presented certificates to Annette Easom and Gemma Scougal, who completed their first ever sprint distance triathlons.

Annette chose the Woodhall Spa Sprint Triathlon as her first event, taking on a 400m pool swim, 24km bike ride and a 5km run.

She said the club prepared her well for the distance, with Monday night ‘brick’ sessions in Clumber Park proving more than adequate training as she regularly worked on two of the three disciplines in one session.

“It was a great event but unfortunately it rained heavily throughout,” she said.

“I have just been a runner for many years but triathlon gave me a new challenge. “

“s soon as I got back after the race I booked myself into another triathlon to see if I could beat my time.”

“Hopefully next time the sun will be shining”.

For Gemma, the club’s secretary, she jumped straight into the deep end with an open water 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run at Big Tri Notts, at Holme Pierre Point.

Despite making her debut, she finished in an impressive ninth position in the womens Under 40 section – which included GB squad trialists.

Gemma got involved in the sport after attending taster sessions at Valley Leisure Centre, run by BPL earlier this year.

She explained: “I had been a regularly attending the Saturday morning coached training sessions at Valley Sports Centre and felt confident in easily covering the distance.”

“I’d had a few swims wearing a wetsuit and decided to give it a go.”

“Although there was a head wind and it was a bit scary to start, I soon got into the swim.”

“I overtook a lot of people on the bike and felt good going into the run, my strongest leg.”

“I was amazed at my final position and can’t wait until the next race.”
