Duo qualify for cycling’s Amateur World Championships in Denmark thanks to Grand Fondo performances

Roger Pennington and Paul Austin represented Retford and District Wheelers in the Tour of Cambridgeshire’s Grand Fondo last weekend.

Starting and finishing at Peterborough Arena, the event was held on closed roads for a 128km course.

Of the 4787 finishers Austin posted fourth place in his age group and Pennington 44th in his group.

Both riders are now eligible to ride in the Amateur World Championships in Denmark later this year.

The latest club Strava League results: Luke Storey 251.6 miles, Peter Smith 210.4, Tony Siveter 159.4, G Allison 157.6, B Weenink 137.7, C Briggs 132.3, A Hazard 119.3, R Pennington 110.2 and P Austin 107.0 miles.

The club run this Sunday is to Matlock, the distance will be about 80 miles for the round trip.

There will be two groups one of which will be riding at a faster pace.

Both groups are to meet in Retford market square for an 8am start. Guests welcome.
