The current record of 1 minute 53 seconds for the 1 kilometre ascent is held by ‘Rocket’ Ronnie Ieronimo and was set in 2011.

Smith is expected to ride and will have to be at his best if he is to set a new record.

As in previous years, riders from other local clubs are welcome to have a private trial and will need to sign on by 9.50am at the latest.

The club’s free wheel competition will be held after the hill climb, which will then be followed by a short ride around the Trent side villages and a cafe stop at Misterton.

This Sunday’s programme will be an ideal opportunity for new riders to join the regulars for a taste of club riding.

The group will leave Retford market square at 9am prompt to allow competitors, marshals and officials to be in their positions for the first man off at 10.01am.

See next week’s Guardian for a report and results from the event.
