Yorkshire and Notts denied by rain at Headingley

The clash between the North Group’s bottom two teams promised to be a star-studded affair with the likes of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Alex Hales, David Willey, Kane Williamson and Andre Russell all available.

But play was called off at 8pm, leaving bottom side Yorkshire with three defeats and two No Results from five North Group matches.

Notts have now won one, lost one and had two No Results from their five.

Prior to the match, Yorkshire’s limited overs captain Alex Lees announced that he would be dropping himself given the availability of Root and Bairstow coupled with Adam Lyth’s twin one-day centuries earlier this week.

New Zealand captain Williamson was handed the leadership reins.

“For me, it was a no-brainer,” said 23-year-old Lees.

“Obviously Rooty and Jonny come back into the team, so two had to miss out there.

“Adam comes into the team. You can’t not play somebody who’s just scored back-to-back hundreds off 60 balls.

“It’s just a gentle reminder to everyone that nobody’s bigger than this club and going forward, we want to put out the best team that we can.”

The likelihood is that the same will happen for Sunday’s meeting with Derbyshire at Headingley.

Notts are back in action tomorrow when they travel to New Road to face Worcestershire.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire plan to pay tribute to late MP Jo Cox on Sunday with a minute’s silence and the players wearing black armbands.

They were due to mark her tragic death tonight.
