Relegation battle goes to the wire

IT’S going to be a nail-biting finale for the two local clubs in the Bassetlaw Cricket League Championship on Saturday.

Marshalls have given themselves a fighting chance of staying up after a great victory over Retford at Middlefield Lane.

They restricted the visitors to 140 for 8 with Gary Andrews claiming 4 for 29, and then a fine 82 not out by Paul van den Heuvel saw them pass that total with six wickets to spare as they claimed 16 valuable points.

In contrast, North Wheatley with Leverton suffered a 43-run defeat when they entertained Harthill.

It looked good for Wheatley when they bowled the visitors out for 146 with Jamie Bovill returning figures of 5 for 29, Jamie Sizer taking 4 for 19, but when it was their turn to take to the crease they were bowled out for just 103 and had to be content with four points.

This leaves them three points ahead of Marshalls with both clubs playing their final matches this Saturday.

In Division One a close match at Wiseton saw the hosts go down by three wickets to Clumber Park.

Wiseton made 168 for 9 with Richard Dannatt scoring 58, but then, despite three wickets apiece for Matt Gorman and Richard Keightley, they could not quite stop the visitors from reaching their target.

Everton were well beaten at Clipstone Welfare, being skittled out for 61 and then seeing the hosts ease past that score for the loss of just two wickets.

In Division Two Lea Park lost Thoresby Park in a close match.

Lea made 116 for 9 with Nick Boulton scoring 33 and Andrew Dewick 31, and their bowlers made it hard work for the Thoresby batsmen who eventually passed the Lea total with just two wickets left.

Marshalls II made it a great day for the club when they travelled to Blidsworth II in Division Four and came away with an 11-run victory .

Fine batting from Tim Sharpe (57) and Haydn Green (41) saw Marshalls post a score of 154 for five, and then Martyn Snell (5 for 39) and Tim Sharpe (3 for 12) helped the visitors claim a narrow win.

But it was not so good for the other two teams in this division as both Rose Leisure and Everton II slid to six-wicket defeats.

At North Warren Road Rose Leisure scored 117 but visitors Wadworth comfortably passed that target, and Everton were bowled out for 116 in their home match against Woodsetts and then saw the visitors claim an easy win.

In Division Five North Wheatley with Leverton II regained the top spot after annihilating Mansfield Hosiery Mills III, skittling then out for 45 and then passing that total for the loss of just one wicket.

Wheatley’s nearest rivals Anston III had to be content with a winning draw away to Misterton who restricted the visitors to 167 for 8 and then held out to finish on 148 for 7.

This means Wheatley are now three points ahead with the final round of matches coming up this Saturday.

In Division Six there was a welcome victory for Wiseton II at Weston.
