The reformation at Marshalls

Although the club have lost a number of first team players and long term servants, Snell insists it will be business as usual come the 2013 season, albeit with a new club structure.

The Saturday side skipper told the Guardian that some influential figures at the club departed at the end of the 2012 campaign, forcing a change in the way Marshalls operate.

“The first team got relegated in September and then at our AGM we had a lot of first team players retire, and some senior members and committee members packed in as well,” he said.

“We called a special meeting to see who we had left and what we wanted to do, and now we’re going to have just one Saturday team and one Sunday team, and our junior teams will remain as they were.”

“The Bassetlaw Cricket League have passed the Saturday team into Division Four, rather than Division One, for next season.”

Working on a smaller budget, the club will not employ an overseas professional, but Snell believes opportunities will open up for local youngsters.

“We’re left with a pretty young team, which isn’t a bad thing, it means the youngsters will be more involved.”

“If they want to, they’ll be able to contribute to the running of the club.”

Snell, a seven year veteran at the club, is under no illusions as to the rebuilding task at hand, but believes a stronger Marshalls Cricket Club will emerge from a turbulent period.

“This year will be the hardest we’re going to have but once we get to next season and get back playing, things will all fall into place,” he said.

“I’m sure we’ll come out of it stronger. There used to be a bit of an ‘us and them’ culture with two teams on a Saturday but that won’t exist now.”

Stuart Whitlam, who sits on the Bassetlaw Cricket League committee, is the club’s new chairman, Ant Favill is vice chairman, Mark Whitlam fills the honourary secretary role and Adam Turver is the Lincoln League captain.
