Nail biter at the Avenue

The hosts were hoping to put a heavy defeat at the hands of Notts Academy behind them, but had to settle for a share of the spoils with Wollaton.

Connor Smith picked up the first wicket, and with the score on 55, the introduction of spin gave Worksop hope, Mark Smallwood and Dave Hancock in the wickets.

The opening bowlers were re-introduced to take care of the lower order, Wollaton bowled out for 166.

The run chase could not have got off to a worse start however, Worksop reduced to 4 for 3 with Smallwood, Chris Taylor and Gareth Purshouse all falling to loose shots.

Wayne Spooner and Connor Smith steadied the ship and survived some slow overs to set a platform to launch from.

They took the score to 72 when Smith, struggling with cramp, fell for 23.

Spooner however continued and found another partner in Kelbert Walters, who both went on the attack with shots all around the ground.

Worksop’s Spooner fell for a fine 62, and then Morris, Walters, Glen Pym and Grey all went in quick succession and with 12 needed and one wicket left it was nervy stuff for both sides, the odd loose ball taking the scores level.

Hancocks was bowled, making the game tied and resulting in 11 points each, keeping Worksop bottom of the table.
