IN their final Premier League game before returning to the Bassetlaw League Kiveton were unable to bow out in style as they were beaten by six wickets at Papplewick.

Australian Chris Hadley took up his usual opening position in his final game for the club, accompanied by Richard Grainger.

The pair battled hard against testing conditions and some very accurate bowling.

As the 50 partnership approached Papplewick’s change of bowling brought about the breakthrough, but not in conventional fashion. Grainger (10*) was struck on the head from a short delivery by Bradley Matthews (2-16) and was taken to hospital.

After a short delay Matt Cartwright replaced Grainger and he and Hadley moved the score on to 70 before the first wicket fell with Cartwright (13) dismissed by Aaron Onyon (1-71).

Kiveton then suffered a mini collapse as they were reduced to 83 for 3 with both James Bullivant and Rob Coxon failing to trouble the scorers.

Hadley was joined by the increasingly reliable Richard Spurr (30) and they moved the score on to 131 before Spurr was run out.

By this stage Hadley (61) had reached his 50 but he fell soon afterwards as Kiveton went from 131 for 3 to 136 for 6.

A useful lower order partnership of 44 between Lee Brooks (16) and Luke Donaghy (30) gave the score some respectability but the third mini collapse s saw the last three wickets fall for just three runs.

In reply Papplewick were confident of reaching the total and with Grainger still absent regular supporter Mark Hopwood donned the whites.

Openers Alex Lloyd (84) and Tim Clarke (34) were impressive, before Lloyd fell to a smart catch in the deep by Jonathan Cushing off the bowling of Luke Donaghy (4-44).

Mark Nelson (24*) shepherded the home side to victory in the 43rd over.

Kiveton skipper Brooks was full of praise for Hadley and Donaghy.

“It was nice to see Chris get some runs in his last game for the club and I was pleased for Luke with his four wickets as he has bowled well most of the season without much luck”
