Despite losing three wickets in the session, the visitors reached lunch on 288 for five, giving them an overall lead of 84.

The two batsmen who were unbeaten overnight, Scott Borthwick and Paul Collingwood, both fell inside the first hour and in a similar manner.

Luke Wood, who made 65 not out on the first day, preserved his status as the game’s leading scorer by inducing Borthwick to chop on for 63. Collingwood then failed to get his bat out of the way as he attempted to leave a delivery from Brett Hutton alone, departing for 40.

Michael Richardson exploited the lack of a third man by running a succession of early boundaries down there on his way to making 49 not out but he lost Gordon Muchall just before the interval.

Muchall had helped add 57 for the fifth wicket before becoming a little too ambitious against Samit Patel.

He charged at the spinner and lifted him only just over the head of Michael Lumb at mid on. The fielder went back half a dozen paces in expectation and gratefully accepted the repeat offering to remove Muchall for 32.
