But the captain of the side sitting pretty at the top of the table insists he takes no joy from his former club’s relegation battle, ahead of the vital derby clash.

Ordsall are 28 points ahead of second placed Anston and 36 ahead of Glapwell, meaning they need just 13 points from their remaining two games to secure the league title.

Spooner hopes it won’t go down to the wire, as he looks forward to facing bottom side Retford at All Hallows Street on Saturday.

“We’ve got one foot in the Notts Premier,” he told the Guardian.

“We need 13 points to be certain of the league title, and five points to be certain of promotion.”

“But we want to win the league.”

“It would be a nice way to do it to win on Saturday against Retford.”

“I’ve played for them in the past and it’s sad to see where they are, but we have to think about ourselves.”

Ordsall Bridon’s success this season has been a team effort, according to the captain.

But he highlighted the capture of two players in particular as vital components of the promotion bid.

“We’ve brought in a couple of key players, with our overseas player Tim Miles and Paul van den Heuvel from Marshalls.”

“They were the two players we really needed, it’s kicked everyone else on.”

“But the depth we’ve had in the batting line-up has also been key, it’s allowed players to play with freedom.”

“What we wanted before the season was to play as a team, one unit, and we’ve managed to do that.”

Another factor in Ordsall’s rise to the top of the Championship has been the backing of local businessman Craig Buckingham.

The RedRock chief, formerly involved with Worksop, helped bring in star player Miles.

Spooner said: “Craig’s contacts and experience in the game and the business world have helped greatly.”

“He’s funded the overseas player and he’s been a great support for us.”
