Defeat for Aston Hall

Aston lost their first two batsmen with just two runs between them.

Uzman Azeem conspired with Josh Coulson (14) to add 67 for the fourth wicket and the challenge developed when skipper Rob Ward joined Azeem and the duo added 70 more for the fifth wicket.

This took the score to 172 for five when Azeem left just short of his century at 97.

His innings included 10 fours and three sixes.

Ward stayed until he reached 55 and the last Aston wicket fell on the last ball of the innings with the score at 232.

Wickersley’s challenge dithered at first, and they had declined to 28 for 2.

Stumper Jordan Lowe came in to accompany youngster Jordan Bethel and they conspired to add 139 runs and take the score to 229 for 4.

Bethel left at this point, and Lowe added the final few runs required, and was 60 not out at the close, as Wickersley won with six wickets and nine overs to spare. Josh Coulson took three for 31 for Aston.

In Division One, Aston Hall B gained a valuable victory in their fight against relegation, beatingBarnsley B at Green Lane.

Barnsley batted first and their innings meandered to 83 for 6. Jake Malkin (30) and Richard Ledger (61) took up the cause to add 94 for the seventh wicket and Barnsley’s innings closed at 212 for 9.

James Green took 3 for 48 and Nigel Walker 4 for 40 for Aston.

Skipper Anthony Firth opened with 39 and Robert Ross stuck 14 fours in his 73 to help Aston to 186 for 5.

The innings wobbled slightly at this point as Aston lost three more wickets before achieving a winning total.

Division Three’s Maltby went to Whiston PC B and were beaten in a hard fought game.

Whiston batted first with Antony Lancashire opening with 23. The bulk of the innings was a third wicket stand of 76 between Lewis Sansome who hit 40 and a patient 62 from Andy Allard.

Whiston posted 210 for 8 with Gary Porter taking 3 for 55.

In reply, Paul Jevons struck 39, supported by Nik Laughton’s 35 and latterly 30 from Dave Clayden. However, the Whiston total proved beyond reach and Maltby had to settle for 170 for 7 and a descent from second to third place in Division Three.

At Muglet Lane Doncaster Town C scored 134 for 8 against Maltby B. Ross Owen top scored with 29 and Peter Brewster took 3 for 33 and Michael Cannadine 3 for 26.

Maltby needed two wickets and 37 overs to record their success. Peter Brewster was 39 not out and Mark Rowling 36 not out at the close.
