Aston move into second but Maltby lose again

Aston Hall 218 for 9

Hallam 131

AFTER claiming a first appearance in the Whitworth Cup final last week, Aston Hall moved into second place in the Premier Division with a comprehensive win over Hallam at green Lane.

Hallam were invited to defend first and Rohan Pooley (41) and Scott Hibbett (42) added 66 runs for the second wicket.

Amir Riaz came in at the fall of the third wicket and stayed to conclusion with an excellent 58 not out.

This enabled a final Aston score of 218 for 9.

Initially Hallam made a good attempt and had reached 67 for 2.

The introduction of Uzman Azeem into the bowling changed events.

Azeem took three of the next five wickets to fall to leave the challenge in tatters at 81 for 7.

Humphrey Emery scored 31 and Jesse Hemingway led a late resistance with 33 not out.

The innings inevitably closed at 131 all out, 87 runs short and with 10 overs remaining. Azeem took 5 for 29 and Asadullah Butt 3 for 40

Aston are having a notable season, just three years after returning to the Premier Division, chasing the possibility of a league championship some 36 years since their last success.

DIVISION TWO

Hallam B 131

Aston Hall B 138

ASTON Hall B visited Hallam B at Sandygate, batted first and skipper Anthony Firth opened with 31.

The innings was meandering to a smallish total at 90 for 7 when Nigel Walker (21) and stumper Craig builds (23) added 39 runs for the eighth wicket, to enable a final total of 138 all out.

Henry Wildey took 3 for 29 for Hallam.

In their innings Hallam B got off to a good start, the young opening pair of Jack Taylor (30) and Robert Basu (29) adding 57 for the first wicket.

Victory looked certain at 100 for 3.

A wicket fell at this point, Tim Shaw took the next three cheaply, two of them clean bowled; and then the final three wickets fell with just four more runs added for a total of 131 - short by seven runs.

Tim Shaw took 4 for 23 and Nigel Walker 3 for 31.

DIVISION THREE

Maltby 131

Frecheville 133 for 6

AT Muglet Lane, Maltby are now without a win for the past month and their opponents, Frecheville took advantage of their dip in form for a four wicket win.

Maltby batted first and after losing their openers with just 10 on the board, Tom Groom hit 35 to boost the score to 102 for five.

The innings faulted after this and Maltby were eventually all out for 131.

David Clayton bowled well for Frecheville claiming four for 28.

After losing their first two wickets for 25, Frecheville’s young prodigy Todd Saxelby had joined the innings.

Once again the 17-year-old led the scoring with 60, including eight fours.

Clayton was 25 not out as Frecheville reached their target.

DIVISION FOUR

Frecheville B 99

Maltby B 102 for 6

AT Silkstone Road Frecheville B could only muster 99 against Maltby B.

Opener Daniel Kempton scored 34 and Maltby’s ace was 19-year-old Michael Cannadine who took 6 for 28 from 13 overs.

Another youngster John Pinkos took 3 for 13.

Maltby achieved their target with four wickets lost.
