Aston Hall’s first victory

Aston Hall picked up their first South Yorkshire Cricket League Premier Division win of the season, beating Coal Aston on Saturday.

Coal Aston batted first with opener Matthew Johnson scoring 38.

Dave Furniss (26*) and skipper Liam Johnson (26) were the other innings of note as Coal Aston’s innings closed at 161 for eight.

Aston Hall were without a win prior to this game, and they lost their first three batsmen with just 18 runs between them.

Scott Hibbett struck five fours and two sixes in reaching 47 and a seventh wicket unbroken partnership between Todd Saxelby (32*) and Juan Grobbelaar (31*) saw them to victory with 16 overs remaining.

In Division One, Aston Hall B also secured their first win of the new season, beating Rotherham Town’s B side at Green Lane.

The visitors decided to bat first and after being in trouble at 24 for 4, Jonathan Plater was joined by Matt Watson (27) to add 62 runs for the fifth wicket.

Plater was last man out with a terrific 81, including nine fours and four sixes.

Tim Shaw took 4 for 25 and James Green 4 for 34 for the hosts.

In reply, Aston were 37 for 3 before skipper Anthony Firth hit 44 not out and Kieron Gray reached 47 not out as they passed the required target in 46.4 overs with six wickets to spare.

Tickhill beatNorton Woodseats as Mitchell Phelps took five wickets for the winners.

Phelps and fellow paceman Dom McGough restricted Norton Woodseats to 175 for 8.

Tickhill skipper Ashley Fiddler led his side home with an unbeaten 73 (11 fours) sharing an unbeaten fourth wicket partnership of 115 with James Needham.

Division Three’s Maltby lost out by just 21 runs to Thorpe Hesley.

Thorpe could only muster 122 for 9, as Gary Porter (3 for 31) and Philip Fletcher (3 for 4) took wickets.

Maltby found the conditions equally difficult though at 60 for 3.

The partnership between Philip Fletcher (25) and Kevin Porter (25) looked to be heading the team in the right direction.

But when this duo left the innings quickly came to a conclusion at 101 all out.
