Carter, who left Nottingham for Derbyshire at the end of last season, has now moved south and picked up three wickets for just six runs in only 12 deliveries to rock the home county.

Gareth Berg and Brad Wheal also struck for the visitors to leave Notts on 116 for six at lunch.

Notts began the day on their overnight score of 39 for one but soon lost nightwatchman Jake Ball, Riki Wessels and Steven Mullaney in a fiery early burst from Carter.

Ball hoisted his first delivery of the day to Adam Wheater at midwicket for his overnight 14. Wessels tried to take on his former team-mate and lifted a bouncer into the hands of Mason Crane on the fence and Mullaney chopped a rising delivery onto his stumps.

Brendan Taylor clipped Berg to square leg and Samit Patel hobbled off lbw after being hit on the full by Wheal.

Michael Lumb and Chris Read remained together until the interval, with Notts still 203 runs behind.
