Carty follows dream to Beijing
A North Notts Arena Snooker Academy star has travelled all the way to China this week, to take on the very best players in the world.
Ashley Carty, who has learned his trade over the past five years at the Arena, is in action at World Snooker’s Under 21 World Championship in Beijing.
The event will present the Thurcroft youngster with a chance to enter the professional ranks.
And his bid for a pro tour place has been aided by support from family, friends and three local companies.
Hudson Removals of Thurcroft, Simm Conveyors of Maltby and Cue Craft, based at Shireoaks Triangle, have all backed the 17-year-old with sponsorship.
It has been somewhat of a breakout year for Carty, who counts World number 25 Martin Gould and the current World Under 21 champion Lyu Haotian in his recent victims.
He began playing the sport seriously under the watchful eye of North Notts Arena Academy coach Daz Presgrave five years ago.
Arena general manager Nigel Turner is hoping that Carty will realise his dream to join the professional ranks.
He said: “It’s great for local youngsters to be able to realise their natural talent and ambitions, and we’re confident with his skill, mental strength and determination Ashley will fulfil his dreams and perhaps even appear at The Crucible in Sheffield in years to come.”
Carty is one of six local youngsters who have come through the Academy to feature in the Worksop Snooker League.
Presgrave and his fellow coach Steve Mallender run their academy sessions on Saturdays from 1pm to 5pm and are looking for young players to follow in Carty’s footsteps.
