Maltby Academy students to fence, box and cheer

MALTBY Academy students will be perfecting their slash and parry, bob and weave and their pompom waving, with a trio of new sporting activities.

The school listened to requests from pupils for more varied extra curricular options, and have organised external coaching in fencing, boxing and cheerleading.

Head of PE Richard McNabb told the Guardian the new activities had been well received by the students.

“The idea actually came from students, they wanted to do some different sports, and we wanted to makr sure we offered a really good variety.”

“That’s why we went for fencing, boxing and cheerleading.”

The coaching is delivered by professionals in fencing and cheerleading, at Maltby Leisure Centre, while the boxing takes place at Conisbrough Boxing Club.

Transport to and from the sessions is provided by the school.

Richard added: “It’s been received really well by the students and we’ve had a really good uptake.”

“As with any sport, there could be the option to go down the competitive route with all three of these activities.”
