Brierley wins local derby clash in his second professional bout

The 19-year-old from Harworth took on Worksop’s Simeon Cover, and impressed the judges sufficiently to take the decision.

Brierley, formerly of Langold ABC and Manton ABC, was entering the ring for the second time as a professional, and admitted to some nerves ahead of the bout.

He told the Guardian: “I was nervous but ready for it, it was a good kind of nerves.”

“I had quite a long training camp for the fight, about 11 or 12 weeks and it had all gone well in preparation.”

The 6ft 4ins boxer was hoping to add a second stoppage victory to his record, but had to settle for a points win.

“It was a good, tough fight – Simeon is a really strong guy and he’s been in with some of the best, he’s been in the game a long time.”

“I enjoyed it, and I think I hurt him a few times, but he knows how to recover and protext himself and come back.”

“He told me after that I hit him with some good shots.”

Brierley, who made his professional debut with a TKO win over Tamai Harding last November, doesn’t yet know when his next fight will be, but he’s not taking it easy, the teenager is already back in Steve Slaney’s Castle Gym in Conisbrough.

“I’m not sure when I’m on next, but I’m back in training already after a weekend off.”

“I’m taking it steady, but I never out of the gym for too long, I like to keep on top of my fitness so it’s not too hard to get back into things.”

For Worksop’s Cover, it was his 71st professional bout, of which he’s won 16 and drawn two.

The 35-year-old won the British Masters super-middleweight title in 2004 when he defeated Hemid Jamali.
