Bomber Etches boosts boxing club

A PROFESSIONAL boxer took time out from his preparations for a bout on the undercard of Ricky Hatton’s big comeback, to inspire fighters at Manton Athletic ABC last Friday.

Adam ‘the Bomber’ Etches, from Sheffield, is hoping to increase his record to 10 wins and no losses when he fights at Manchester Arena on 24th November, before Hatton takes to the ring.

The 21-year-old light-middleweight, who is promoted by Hatton, was invited to the Retford Road gym by Manton coach Chris Boyle last week, and delighted the youngsters by getting into the ring with them.

He told the Guardian: “It went brilliantly, he came down and put on a light training session for all the lads, then got in the ring and sparred with eight or nine of our boys who are fighting.”

“They loved it because Adam is an up and coming contender and it was a decent workout for him.”

“I know him from the Ingle Gym and got speaking to him and he was more than happy to come down, we were really pleased with how it went.”

The ‘Bomber’ isn’t the only Adam impressing between the ropes, as Manton’s own Adam Dent put in an explosive performance recently at Eggborough Sports Club, Selby, to stop his opponent in the first round.

The Worksop youngster used his long reach to keep Billy Lampit at bay, before some brutal body shots had the referee administering a standing eight count.

Lampit was unable to recover, giving the Manton Athletic ABC prospect his second win in the ring.

In Nottingam, Declan Cairns lost on points at Clifton Miners Welfare.

The Manton boxer took standing eight counts in rounds two and three, facing a tough opponent from Warwickshire.

Coach Dean Eshelby told the Guardian: “Dec was boxing a strong lad, we told him to stay on the outside and throw uppercuts when his man came in. We’ve been telling all the lads that fitness is so important, even if you have all the skills, and I think Declan knows now that fitness is what lost him the fight.”
