Blyth: County race track to host European Radio-Controlled Car Racing Championships

A Notts race track with a difference will be welcoming some of the best drivers in the world to the county next summer after winning the right to host the 2015 European Championships.

The Robin Hood Raceway in Blyth, which is celebrating its 25th birthday this year, has been selected by the European Federation of Radio Operated Model Automobiles to host the continent’s biggest radio-controlled car event.

The track is built at Moat Farm in Torworth and is maintained by James Helliwell and the York Off-road Car Club, which has its home there.

James, 37, who has been racing since he was 10 years old and is a British Championship F1-rated driver, said: “We’re delighted to win the right to host what is a real headline event in the radio-control racing calendar.”

“This is the best track in the country for electric cars, and we have had drivers from America and all over Europe come here and practice already.”

“We usually have around 5,000 visitor days a year and expect the European event to generate a lot of extra interest.

“This is good for tourism in the area, as well as local pubs, hotels, and shops.”

“It is also going to be streamed live online by rcracingtv.net.”

“So there will be lots of eyes on us from all over the world.”

“The British team has a good chance of winning the Championships here .”

“I would rate our chances at about 90 per cent.”

“There are a couple of very good German and Scandinavian drivers.”

“But our team has a lot more depth.”

The track has also become popular with drivers of full-sized machines, such as British Superbikes stars Dan Linfoot and James Westmoreland and British Drift champion Paul Smith.
