Blockbusting boxing show lined up for Worksop arena

Worksop is set to stage another blockbusting boxing show, with an International Challenge light-heavyweight belt up for grabs.

After the success of their July show at the North Notts Community Arena, JE Promotions have unveiled plans for an ‘International Glory’ event on Saturday, November 26.

It will be the third promotion that the outfit, headed by former pro Joe Elfidh, have hosted at the 750-capacity arena. And topping the bill will be championship action featuring 31-year-old Richard Thomas, from Doncaster.

His opponent has yet to be confirmed, but given that all Challenge belt fights have to be approved by the British Boxing Board of Control, it is sure to be a competitive contender with the necessary eight-round experience.

Thomas has come a long way since being stopped on his debut by Ben Fitch back in December 2013. He bounced back in style three months later to halt Bryan Richardson in just 95 seconds, and he goes into this next Worksop contest on the back of three straight wins.

His confidence will be further boosted by his younger brother Nathan sharing the bill with him for the first time. Nathan Thomas hit the road for his pro debut at the historic York Hall, losing on points to fellow debutant Fion O’Meara, who remains unbeaten, back in November 2013. Now the 27-year-old welterweight will be back in action, looking for his first win.

Popular local fighter Darren Snow, known as the ‘Road Warrior’ for his aggressive style of fighting away from home, is also an attractive name on the bill as he enters into his 12th pro bout against an opponent yet to be named. The former unlicensed champion, aged 34 from Dinnington, has won his last two fights at the North Notts Arena, so the setting should provide the home advantage again for the cruiserweight.

Also in action is exciting super-lightweight Sahib ‘Saby’ Mann. The 18-year-old from Derby will be keen to follow up his explosive debut win over Daniel Mickleburgh last July when he stopped the 29-year-old from Heywood with just three seconds left on the clock in the third and penultimate round at Cannock on the same night that Anthony Upton won the English super-lightweight title.

Another JE Promotions fighter on show is 26-year-old Elvis Makoda, from Hayes, Middlesex. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, ‘Double El’ comes into the fight fresh from a victory on Hallowe’en weekend when the super-lightweight floored opponent Gyula Tallosi with a well-timed body-shot in the final round.

Lightweight David Zubrzycki will make his pro bow on the night. The Leeds-born former unlicensed star kicks off his paid career with a four-rounder against an opponent yet to be confirmed.

The six-fight card looks set to be sell-out already with each home fighter bringing more than 100 fans in support. Promoter Elfidh commented, “It’s the third show at the venue, and they’re getting bigger and better every time.

“We’ve got a great gym in Fighting Fit Gym, run by Michael White, and top sponsors on board with Roofdec and 1ClickPrint, who all help to make the shows a success.”
