The Vicar of Dibley actor Trevor Peacock has died at the age of 89 from a “dementia-related illness”.

The actor, who is best known for his role as Jim Trott in the BBC One comedy series The Vicar of Dibley, died on Monday (8 March).

His death was confirmed to the Press Association by his agent.

A statement on behalf of his family said: “Trevor Peacock, actor, writer and song-writer, died aged 89 on the morning of March 8th from a dementia-related illness.”

Peacock’s character of Jim in The Vicar of Dibley was known for his stammer, which saw him repeat the word “no” over and over multiple times before he finished a sentence.

Peacock is the fifth major cast member from the much-loved comedy series to die in recent years, as Roger Lloyd-Pack, who portrayed farmer Owen Newitt, died in 2014, followed by Liz Smith, who played Letitia Cropley in 2016.

Emma Chambers, who played the well-loved character of Alice Tinker, and John Bluthal, who played Frank, both died in 2018.

‘Our thoughts are with his family and friends’

Peacock also starred in an array of other TV and film productions, including his role as George in the 2012 film Quartet, Papa Claus in the 2007 festive film Fred Claus, and the 1996 fantasy TV series Neverwhere.

Comedy TV channel Gold - which frequently plays old episodes of the The Vicar of Dibley - posted on Twitter, “We are all saddened to learn that Trevor Peacock, who played Jim Trott so brilliantly in The Vicar of Dibley has passed away at the age of 89. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Fans of Peacock have also taken to Twitter to pay their respects to the actor.

One Twitter user wrote: “Very sad to hear that Vicar of Dibley's Jim Trott (actor Trevor Peacock) has died aged 89.

“One of the best comedy shows, Trevor was a great, and very funny, actor. He will be sorely missed, ‘No, no, no, yes!’ RIP Trevor.”

Another commented: “No no no no… But, respectfully, thank you Trevor Peacock, for all the joy you brought.”
