Popular ice cream brand Magnum has issued a product recall for one of its ice cream tubs, due to undeclared ingredients and incorrect packaging.

This is everything you need to know about the product recall, from how to know if you’ve been affected to what to do if you have a recalled product.

What’s being recalled?

Magnum has decided to take the precautionary measure of recalling a limited number of its products due to allergy fears.

The recall affects 440ml Magnum white ice cream tubs with the following batch codes:

  • L9255AT138
  • L9255BT138

They also have a best before date of September 2021.

The best before date and batch codes can be found on the rim of the lid.

Why are they being recalled?

The tubs are being recalled due to the fact the product has been incorrectly labelled with the Italian version of the back label, instead of the English version, therefore not clearly indicating the presence of milk in the product.

This could be harmful for those who are lactose intolerant or have a milk allergy.

If you have a milk allergy and consume diary, you might experience:

  • Hives
  • Wheezing
  • Itching or tingling sensation around your mouth
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
  • Coughing or shortness of breath
  • Vomiting

Those with an intolerance to lactose can experience lesser, but still harmful, symptoms such as stomach cramps, feeling sick and diarrhoea.

A statement from the company which owns Magnum, Unilever, said, “The safety of the people that buy and use our products is always our number one priority, which is why we are taking the voluntary precaution of recalling these batches.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience and concern caused and thank everyone for their cooperation.”

What should I do if I’ve bought the recalled product?

If you have a 440ml tub of Magnum white ice cream with a matching batch code and best before date, then you are advised not to eat it.

Instead, you should contact the Unilever customer careline on 0800 146 252 or email [email protected].

The customer notice states, “We can confirm that no other Magnum products are affected.”

Therefore if you have bought a Magnum product that isn’t the white ice cream tub, you have nothing to be concerned about.

Where were the white chocolate tubs sold?

The recalled tubs of ice cream have been sold in many of the major supermarkets across the UK.

They are currently available at Asda for £2.50, and have been previously sold at Tesco, Iceland and Ocado.

Does Magnum have any dairy-free options?

If you do suffer from a dairy allergy, are lactose intolerant or are vegan, Magnum do have some products that are suitable for you.

In stick form, they have either the Magnum vegan classic (vanilla ice cream in a dark chocolate shell) or the Magnum vegan almond, which has the addition of almonds mixed through the chocolate.

They currently have no dairy-free tubs available.
