Memories of St John’s Boys’ football team

Re: the issue of the Worksop Guardian 12th June, page 38.

The football team was St John’s Boys Juniors. The old school, long demolished is a car park now near Victoria Square.

The year was 1951 or 52 and the final of the Parry Cup was played on the old town ground against Langold School.

Langold were top of the league that year and had beaten St John’s home and away that seasaon.

We managed to win by one goal to nil, scored by Harry Dickinson, sat on the right next to Jeffrey Mee the captain holding the cup.

The other team captain was Keith Tupling who I think had a good run in non-league football. But the best known was Gordon Harris who became a professional with Burnley FC and later became their captain.

Those on the photo are: Top Left - Mr Blessington (sports coach), Mr F. W. Jackson (head).

Top Row L-R: Terry Christian, Alan Hudson, Alan Dickinson, Johnny Heald, Tony Hunt, Eric Wells and David Lawton.

Front Row - Roger Jackson, John Dickinson, Harry Dickinson, Jeffrey Mee, Ian Milroy, me, Ernest Dane.

I left Worksop in 1959 and have very fond memories.
