Your library needs you this summer

The council is once again preparing to take part in promoting the summer reading challenge to young people in schools across the county.

Every summer, in a bid to promote a love of reading, children aged between four and 11-years-old are invited to spend part of the holidays reading six books.

Those who continue on their exciting reading journey collect stickers and incentives along the way and those who read all six books during the holidays receive a medal.

Volunteers, aged 14 and over, are needed to listen to the children talk about the books they have read as well as give out the stickers and rewards.

People who take part in lending a hand will gain new skills and build confidence, meet new people and receive a certificate.

There are 19 libraries across Notts taking part, and the county council will be able to pay travel expenses to all volunteers.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge takes place from Saturday 14th July to Monday 10th September.

Based around the theme of Story Lab, the county council believes this year’s challenge will attract a lot of interest in all its libraries.

The closing date for applications is Monday 30th April and as this volunteering opportunity involves working with children, a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check will be made on all applicants over 16.
