Young carers treated to free day out and party

The event, on Saturday, December 15, will consist of an hour’s bowling at the Barnsley Metrodome centre, followed by a party and the chance to bag free Christmas gifts, one for themselves and one for the person they care for.

The treat has been set up by businesses and organisations that include Carers Trust East Midlands and Home Instead Senior Care (HISC).

Across the region, there are 30 registered carers, aged between seven and 17, who look after other family members at home. But the event organisers suspect there are many others they don’t know about.

Victoria Waring, director of HISC, said: “Working in the care industry, I am all too aware of the pressures and responsibilities put on my team.

“However, young carers do this daily, without complaint and for nothing in return. Without them supporting their family members, the cost to the social care system would be huge.

“Because of this, I wanted to do something for them, to help recognise the work they do, and I am privileged to be part of this fantastic event.”

Harworth councillor David Challinor has donated £250 to help pay for the event.

Free buses will pick up the carers at Retford Leisure Centre at 8.15 am and Worksop Leisure Centre at 8.35 am.
