Yannie defies conditions to impress in Ibiza triathlon

Yannie Duveen, who only joined the club in 2014, did her first sprint triathlon the year after.

Since then she has gone from strength to strength and entered longer distance events each year.

Her time for the 2017 Outlaw Half in Nottingham qualified her to represent GB in her age category. She was one of 650 possible candidates for 300 GB age places.

Preparation for the ETU event was based around all the training sessions that the club have at BPL Leisure Centre and entry into more events.

One of the final events was the Outlaw Full triathlon in Nottingham.

The event in Ibiza was quite a challenge. With the few days before the actual event having pleasant warm weather, things took a turn for the worse with heavy rain leading to flooding and the event being delayed for two hours and the cycle section shortened from 90 to 45 km.

The 1.9km swim and 21km bike ride stayed the same.

Despite all this, Yannie completed the course and was placed a very creditable 14th in her age category.

She said: “Without the support around me, I would not have been able to do this, and I would like to thank all my family for letting me do this, especially my son and training buddy Matan Duveen as he came out on the many long-distance bike rides, open water swims etc.

“I am proud to be a member of The Bassetlaw Triathlon Club and would like to thank head coach Stephen Chambers for his continued support and encouragement.”

Son Matan is also a keen triathlete and member of Bassetlaw Triathlong Club and has completed a number of events this year.

Both are avid supporters of the club and have both recently gained Level One coaching qualifications that they hope to use putting something back into the club.
