Worksop: Welbeck Abbey Brewery opens its first pub

The Welbeck Abbey Brewery has officially opened it’s first ever town centre pub.

Portland House, on Eccleshall Road in Sheffield, is the brewery’s newest venture and is a micro bar serving Welbeck ales, guest breweries, world beers plus wines and spirits

It will also serve products from the Sundlaug Coffee Company, which is based on Welbeck Estate, tea from Birdhouse Tea Company, Tipple Tails cakes and Waterall Brothers pork pies, all of whom are based in Sheffield.

“Where we can we’re using local suppliers and Tom Purcell, our general manager, has taken great care to source a fantastic selection of wine provided by Le Bon Vin and spirits via Starmore Boss,” said Claire Monk, head brewer at Welbeck.

“It’s not all about the booze though with a large range of soft drinks and an alcohol free beer too.

“We think it’s a lovely place to sit back, relax and watch the world go by.

And, it’s situated next to the bus stop making it very easy to get to from Sheffield bus station.

“It’s had great feedback so far and any further feedback is always welcome.

“We welcome well-behaved dogs and little folk are permitted until 6pm or at the managers’ discretion during busier periods.

“We’ve tried our utmost to ensure there’s something for everybody so please, don’t be shy – we would love to hear your thoughts.”

Welbeck have also announced their November specials for pubs around the area.

These are Ernest George, a dark brown ale, Porter Oak, a new ale that is spiced and strong, and Nightingale, an English IPA.

Ernest George is made with dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavours and is named after the man who remodelled part of Welbeck Abbey after a fire in the early 1900s.

Porter Oak celebrates the heritage and forestry of the area while Nightingale celebrates traditional English brewing.

At the end of the month, the Welbeck Estate will host its annual Christmas market with around 70 designers having stalls at the event, as well as the celebrated food market.

The event will run from November 27-29.
