Bosses at the base on Roebuck Way confirmed to this newspaper that around 25 per cent of its workforce in its head office, supply chain and retail department will be out of a job in the next few months.

The announcement is likely to be met with a lot of anger as employees will be forced to search for new roles - just two weeks into 2015.

Wilko first put the positions under consultation in October 2014.

“Now Wilko has closed the consultation, the company is in a position to proceed with the restructuring programme,” a spokesman said.

“Like all businesses, Wilko reviews its resources to ensure it has the right structure in place to meet requirements in the changing retail landscape.”

“Collective consultation is now formally complete but we are still working with team members on the detailed impacts and, at the same time, ensuring that any team members affected are kept fully informed as the restructuring progresses.”

The company has said the final number of team members affected cannot yet be confirmed, but the Guardian understands this to be between 130 and 170 posts.
