Worksop: Tyler Gibson races to save the day for Bassetlaw Hospice

Tyler Gibson, from Retford, took part in the Great North run on Sunday 7th September, to raise money for the hospice, after two people who were meant to be running had to drop out last minute due to injury.

Tyler said: “I got directed to the Bassetlaw Hospice Facebook page by a friend after Helen, the fundraising co-ordinator, put out an appeal asking if anyone had a friend who was fit and would like to take part in the Great North Run for them.”

Helen was originally meant to take part in the race but started having knee problems, she then found a replacement but he broke his foot, so Tyler was called to the rescue.

“I knew it was mad but I thought I would take on the challenge. It’s for a great cause after all.”

Even though he is a runner, Tyler said it was the toughest race he has done, and it probably has something to do with not having much time to train.

He added: “It was really warm weather on the Sunday and not good running conditions. I even got sunburnt on my shoulders.”

“Everyone was told not to expect to do a personal best because of the hot weather.”

“I was surprised with how I did during the race and I kept a comfortable pace.”

Tyler finished the race in 1 hour 36 minutes and has raised £300 for the hospice.

He is now trying to fully recover before his football match on Sunday.

Bassetlaw Hospice provides specialist care for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer or a progressive long-term illness.
