Paul Winter, 25, of Stubbin Lane, told the court he had borrowed the van to go to the shop to buy candles and party hats for his son’s birthday.
While out, police spotted the van and pulled it over for an unrelated reason and then discovered Winter had no insurance.
In court, he pleaded guilty and had his licence endorsed with eight points, taking him over the 12-point threshold, earning him a six-month driving ban.
He was also fined £150, plus £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
