The Duke, who lived from 1800-79 was known as Lord William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck before 1824 and the Marquess of Titchfield between 1824 and 1854.

He was also a Conservative MP from 1824-26 and later a member of the House of Lords.

A British aristocratic eccentric who preferred to live in seclusion, the Duke had an underground maze excavated under his estate at Welbeck Abbey near Clumber Park.

Viewers can see Mr Portillo finding out all about the Duke and his eccentric ways during the programme, which also features stops in Nottingham, Mansfield, Doncaster and Leeds.

The programme is on BBC2 tonight at 6.30pm.
