Staff at the Unicorn, on Bridge Street, only found out last week when a customer popped in with the guide.

The pub was refurbished in the summer of 2013 and the news comes ahead of its second birthday in November.

CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide contains information on 4,500 of the best real ale pubs across the country.

Licensee, Michelle Stowell-Ng, said: “I did not know that we had been nominated, it was a complete surprise.

“To say that we have only been trading for 20 months it is a great achievement.”

People who come in now say it is totally different to before. We get some of the older generation who bring their wives which means a lot.

“It is a credit to the staff and suppliers.”

The pub guide is completely independent and listings are based entirely on nomination by CAMRA members.

On the Unicorn, the guide says: “Town centre pub offering up to three handpulled ‘LocAles’ and one real cider. Refurbished during the summer of 2013 in a traditional style.”
