The market in Worksop was also cancelled on Friday after gusts of over 40mph were recorded - causing stalls to be lifted off the floor.

A Yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met office for the East Midlands with Bassetlaw expected to experience gusts of over 50mph.

Town centre manager for Bassetlaw District Council, Richard Blagg, said: “The safety of the public and stall holders is of paramount importance, and based on the information we have received so far, unfortunately we have decided to close the markets.”

“High winds and gales are expected to strengthen overnight and last throughout Saturday. We appreciate that this is a loss and disappointment for members of the public.” “However, we are not prepared to put anyone’s safety at risk.”

“The first few weeks of the New Year are traditionally a quiet time for market traders and we were not expecting a full market for either towns. However, all traders have been informed of Saturday’s closure.”
