Duane Dyer, of Ely Close, Worksop, pleaded guilty to the theft of the bike at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Friday 10th July.

Outlining the case for prosecution, solicitor Miss Wilde told the court how the owner of the bicycle had called into Speedy Peppers takeaway in Victoria Square for something to eat on Wednesday 8th July, leaving the bike outside.

Around ten minutes later, he noticed the bike was missing and motioned to a passing police car for help.

Police later located the bike in some bushes by Worksop canal and arrested 34-year-old Dyer nearby.

During interview Dyer admitted that he was walking past the takeway with friends, having consumed two bottles of wine, and thought it would ‘be funny’ to ‘wheel the bike away.’

His defence solicitor said: “Dyer came out of prison for a previous offence on Thursday 2nd July. He claims that his friend encouraged him to take their bike as she thought it would be a laugh.”

“He says that he had every intention of giving the bicycle back to the complainant. The bicycle was recovered in a matter of minutes and Dyer confessed to the theft straight away.”

“Dyer has admitted he has issues with alcohol and has made a significant attempt to cut down.”

Magistrates’ imposed a custodial sentence of four weeks.

Dyer was also ordered to pay £180 in criminal court costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
