A Worksop woman will cycle across Hong Kong on Saturday 8th March to raise money for the Weston Park Hospital cancer charity.

Nursery school teacher Katie Langford, 31, decided to take on a 32km cycle ride from Shatin to Tai Po to raise funds after her brother, Alex Langford, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in April last year.

To thank Weston Park for the support he received, Katie and 12 other friends will peddle off across the New Territories area of Hong Kong, arriving in Tai Po before embarking on the return journey.

She said: “It’s been incredibly hard to be so far away from my family during such a traumatic and emotional time.”

“I needed to do something other than being there in person to provide support for my brother throughout his treatment, and the bike ride seemed like the perfect challenge to help raise money and awareness for such a vital facility.”

Since his diagnosis, husband and father-of-two Alex 34, who is a firefighter at Doncaster Airport, has had two operations and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the hospital.

Although Katie has been able to keep regular contact with Alex and her parents via Skype calls, the journey to the UK is a demanding 13 hours long and impossible to make on a regular basis.

She added: “I had to focus on making a difference to those in a similar situation to my brother.”

“I want to raise as much money as possible so that Weston Park Hospital is able to continue providing such high levels of treatment and care to its patients.”

Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross, said: “It’s remarkable what Katie has organised so many miles away in support of the cancer charity and Alex.

“Our support network is increasing by the day and we hope that fundraising events such as this will help to create awareness of the charity internationally.”
