Worksop: Sex assault on jogger was ‘vile’ and ‘degrading’ say investigating officers

Jonjo Elswaino, 17, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to charges of assault by penetration and grievous bodily harm with intent at Notts Crown Court on Wednesday 22nd October.

The offences occurred in Eddison Park Avenue on the evening of Tuesday 1st April 2014.

Elswaino was given an indeterminate sentence – meaning he will only be released when he is considered not to be a threat to the general public. He will not be eligible to be considered for parole until at least 2018.

Detective Inspectors Martin Hillier and Justine Dakin, who led the investigation. said: “Elswaino is undoubtedly a dangerous individual whose young age only adds an extra layer of horror to this case.”

“After putting this woman through a vile and degrading sex assault, as well as beating her beyond recognition, he jumped on a bus as if nothing had happened.”

“He later claimed to an acquaintance that his injured hands and face were from a robbery – that it was he who had been a victim of crime. Meanwhile the woman he had viciously attacked was nursing a broken face and body caused by his fists and feet, not to mention the untold psychological damage of his depraved actions.”

“So traumatised by her ordeal his victim has moved away from the area. Despite this she has shown great dignity and strength throughout the investigation.”

“She has asked me to thank, on her behalf, the people of Worksop, those who came forward with information, those who cared for her in hospital and the Police for their support throughout the investigation.”

“I just hope today’s outcome gives her some sense of justice for what she endured that night.”
