Worksop: School kids receive hi-vis vests as part of Walk to School Week

The donation was made by Specsavers in Worksop to ensure that the children from Prospect Hill Junior School and Priory Primary School will be more visible on their journeys.

The Worksop store is supporting National Walk to School Week to encourage children from the two schools to get some exercise by making the journey between school and home on foot.

The youngsters are being provided with hi-visibility vests to help them stay safe and be seen by motorists while walking to school and on school trips.

Richard Bevan, store director at Worksop Specsavers, said: “National Walk to School Week is a great initiative that is part of National Walking Month.”

“It highlights the health benefits to children and encourages them to lead an improved lifestyle.”

“Several of us at Specsavers are parents and we are aware that schools are encouraged to use high-visibility vests for group outings or walking schemes.”

“As part of the initiative, we are also hoping to raise awareness about free eye tests and glasses that are available to children under 16.”

“It is important to make sure that children have regular eye tests, as an undetected problem could lead to something more severe in the long term.”

Sue Osborn, head teacher at Prospect Hill Junior School, said: “We are very grateful for the donation of the high visibility vests that Specsavers Worksop has given us.”

“The children all really enjoyed the assembly that they did and we all learnt a lot about how important it is to look after your eyes.”

Walk to School Week campaign is organised by Living Streets, the national charity which stands up for pedestrians and helps more than 1.6 million children walk to school.
