The man knocked on the door of her home in Garside Street, Worksop, and asked if she wanted to buy some of the fruit.

But in the short time her back was turned while she fetched the money, he had taken the ring and made off.

It happened at about 11.15am on Monday 22 June.

The lady told the Guardian: “I am dumbfounded and shocked.”

“This has never happened to me before.”

“I used to be on Neighbourhood Watch and I have been to visit people who have been robbed and thought ‘oh my god’.”

“I feel silly,”

“I am always vigilant.”

The man is described as white, about 5ft 7ins, between 40 to 50-year-old and of a medium build. He had black stubble and cropped, dark hair with some grey in it.

He was wearing a waxy jacket, jeans and he had a plastic splint on his left hand which covered his wrist and thumb.

The ring is described as a gold band, about two millimetres wide, with a thicker part at the centre. It has a small chip of ruby set into the gold. It is of huge sentimental value.

The woman added: “We carried on talking but then when he left I went over to the dish and noticed the ring had gone and he was nowhere to be seen on the street.”

“I am too trustworthy.”
